A hip replacement, or arthroplasty, is a procedure in which a hip surgeon removes some or all of a hip joint with arthritis or other conditions and replaces it with an artificial joint, called a prosthesis.

Same-day Hip Replacement Overview

A hip replacement surgery may be necessary for the patient to regain their mobility and resume normal, everyday activities when these non-surgical treatments are no longer effective for treating hip pain:

  • Physical therapy
  • Walking aids
  • Anti-inflammatory medications
  • Cortisone injections

Dr. Vigdorchik believes hip replacement surgery should be recommended only when less invasive alternatives aren’t viable.

Non-operative treatments for hip conditions are prioritized and surgery is only recommended when it is most beneficial to the patient.

Dr. Vigdorchik considers each patient’s condition, medical history, lifestyle, and personal preferences before making a formal recommendation.

Conditions Treated by Same-day Hip Replacement

More than 300,000 hip replacements are performed each year within the United States.

Hip replacements can be performed with:

  • Traditional procedure, called open surgery
  • Minimally-invasive approach, including same-day (outpatient) hip replacements

Dr. Vigdorchik has a track record of successful same-day hip replacements.

Same-day Hip Replacement Recovery

Thirty years ago, patients would be confined to the hospital for weeks after a hip replacement. However, this is no longer the case.

When conditions are optimal, patients are able to have hip replacement surgery performed and leave the hospital on the same day.

In a same-day hip replacement, diseased sections of the hip are removed and replaced through incisions that are much smaller than those of an open hip surgery.

The smaller incisions will:

  • Ease post-surgery pain
  • Reduce scarring
  • Shorten recovery time
